Sara Van Buskirk (SVB) is a genre-defying songwriter and musician whose sound resonates with raw emotion, vivid storytelling, and haunting melodic textures. Hailing from Houston, Texas, SVB has carved out a distinctive space in the Americana and roots music scene—anchored in deep authenticity and musical versatility. Their voice, both literally and lyrically, effortlessly conveys the nuances of human experience, drawing listeners into a world where every note tells a story.
Rooted in the rich traditions of blues, gospel, and roots music, Sara’s early influences span a remarkable range—from Janis Joplin to Chopin. She grew up steeped in the sounds of Nina Simone, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and more. Over time, SVB has developed a sound that is timeless yet unmistakably their own—rich, emotional, and fearless. Whether performing solo, fronting the full SVB band, or collaborating with other artists, their performances are intimate, commanding, and unforgettable.
Sara’s discography reflects a deep personal resonance while connecting with a wide audience. In 2010, they self-released The Place Where You Are, followed by the 2020 single Can We Be Friends?, released in the midst of the global pandemic. In December 2023, SVB joined The Tennessee Freedom Singers (featuring Allison Russell, Brittany Howard, Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires, and more) to record Tennessee Rise at Nashville’s Sound Emporium in support of Gloria Johnson’s campaign—culminating in a live performance at City Winery Nashville in April 2024.
2024 has been a landmark year for SVB. Kicking off with a collaboration with The Bayou City Comeback Chorus at Houston’s Wortham Center, they followed up in March by self-releasing two versions of the single Light Me Up, featuring members of Houston’s beloved Two Star Symphony—alongside a stunning companion visualizer.
In September 2025, SVB released the powerful single “JUST WON’T STOP”—an anthem of resilience and self-determination—accompanied by an official music video created in collaboration with acclaimed artist and activist Lynzy Lab. The release showcases SVB’s continued commitment to music as a force for storytelling, resistance, and emotional truth.
Sara is also a sought-after collaborator, currently writing, recording, and touring with Kam Franklin (of The Suffers) on her debut solo album Land of The Neon Sun—produced by Margo Price and set for release in 2025. SVB also performs with Geoffrey’s Electric Banjo Band, the genre-blending project of Houston musician Geoffrey Muller, which fuses bluegrass, Greek dimotika, and electronic elements into a truly original soundscape.
In 2023, Sara founded Georgia Park Studios, her own recording and creative space, where she is currently producing her second full-length album—expected to release upon funding. She is a voting member of The Recording Academy and actively participates in the Texas Chapter, engaging in artist-centered community events and advocacy.
A fierce advocate for women’s and LGBTQIA+ rights, SVB uses her platform to uplift and inspire, continuing to push the boundaries of Americana and roots music. As her sound continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: Sara Van Buskirk creates music that speaks to the soul—and just won’t stop.
